The new film from Pedro Almodóvar receives impressive first night box office returns while dividing critics

The new work from Pedro Almodóvar, ''Los amantes pasajeros'', opened on the 8th of March, and drew the biggest box office returns for any first night of the acclaimed film-maker's movies to date.

The plot concerns the passengers and crew of a flight to Mexico on an Airbus 340. The flight gets into trouble, and the passengers, confronted with the imminent prospect of death, start to reveal their intimate secrets.

The film has an impressive cast, including such international names as Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz and Paz Vega.

The opinion among the critics has been divided, with some newspapers finding that, this being a return to comedy for Señor Almodóvar, it was a bit thin on the laughs. Nevertheless it found more favour with more specialist entertainment magazines.

For example, Carlos Marañón, in Cinemanía, in particular credited it with achieving an “impossible equilibrium of outmoded kitsch and genius."
